The Tunic - A Brief History

The word 'tunic' can be used to describe many different types of clothing and they can be worn from the shoulders to lengths any where between the hips and the ankles and the garments can have sleeves or be sleeveless.

The name is derived from the Latin tunica, which was a garment commonly worn by both Men and Women in Ancient Rome and these were probably based on similar garments worn by the Greek. The Tunica was worn by all in Roman society and the status of someone could be identified by the by the length and width of the tunica together with the presence or lack of stripes.

The tunic that was worn by the Ancient Greeks had the look of a jacket and they were decorated at the hem line in order to distinguish between the city-states in which a person resided. These tunics were either dyed very bright colours or bleached white, with no significance to status or regional identity.

Nowadays there are tunics available in a massive variety of styles, colours and materials making them very versatile additions to the wardrobe all year round.

Modern Tunic Styles

Tunic Tops - Perhaps the most modern style of tunic in that the reduction in length is the biggest step away from more traditional tunics. Designers are continuously coming up with new styles, which make the tunic tops fashionable in every season, to be worn as part of an outfit whatever the weather. Tunic Dresses - Have become increasingly popular to have in the wardrobe to be used as either a casual dress or an evening dress to be worn on more formal occasions. Designers have created beautiful tunic dresses in traditional colours such as black and white together with adding more vibrant pattern and colour to their ranges in order to make these tunic dresses much more versatile.

During the colder months these dresses can be worn as part of an overall look by coupling them with a pair of fashionable leggings or jeans.
